About us

Welcome to The BarlockR Bicycle Lock!

How BarlockR Was Invented:

BarlockR was invented in Santa Barbara after Pro BMX Performers Tony Sandoval (Guadalajara, Mexico), and David Holden (San Diego), stopping in David's friends house for a weekend beach relaxation break, began brainstorming while cruising the beach front boardwalk.  After over 15 years performing together in professional BMX Shows at schools and special events nationwide for David's BMX Entertainment company Wheels of Freestyle, Inc., they wanted to branch out and create a new brand of products as performing careers were approaching the later innings.  Just throwing out ideas back and forth the idea of incorporating the bike to store items was mentioned and from there, while throwing in a few wheelies and enjoying the Santa Barbara sun, the ideal of storing the lock inside the bicycle was born.

Dave & Tony Celebrating BarlockR

At Breakfast the following morning, the napkins came out, and sitting by the harbor with Dave's childhood friend and now Santa Barbara PA Mark Cohoon, who deserves a mention due to taking part in some of the early conversations, although much to his displeasure gets zero cut, the idea began to really take life.  The thought that we could make this actually happen began to materialize.  Those first conversations were critical, so many problems were raised and at any point the idea could have been shelved for more entertaining topics, it would have been easy to just let it go and move on, but there was something special about this idea, the simplicity, the wide application, the unique nature, so we kept going.

Fast Forward 3 Years:

So many issues cropped up along the way, too many to list, but once this seed sprouted, it just wouldn't go away.  For the next 3 years we attended 3 Interbike Conventions searching for the right manufacturer and getting ideas.  There were so many hurdles to overcome, the first iteration was too heavy and we had to re-design the bar ends with channels to reduce 50% of the weight.  Then we had a weak spot that had to be re-engineered, but this problem turned into an asset as this lock is much stronger than in-kind cable locks based on our strength tests.  Additional issues with sizing, spring tension and perfect sizing to hit the perfect middle point to accommodate the most possible handlebar shapes, angles and internal diameters proved to be very challenging.  Many times we felt like giving up, tens of thousands of dollars were spent during each round of re-engineering and it would have been tempting to accept a less perfect product, but our goal from day one was to never put out a product we hadn't tested and created at the highest possible quality, so we sent it back 4 times for re-engineering, starting the multi-Month process of re-design and re-testing.  After this epic adventure and so many challenges overcome....it's here!!!  It is a proud moment to achieve the completion of a product we worked so hard for.  It could have easily died so many times, but we were committed, the more we spent the more committed and it also stems from our athletic careers in a sport, extreme bicycle riding, that requires extraordinary determination and a never quit mentality, regardless the cost.

We hope you enjoy your BarlockR Lock, understanding how much love went into making it exactly the way it is and we look forward to bringing new future versions and new innovative products to the bike industry which has given us so much over the past 2+ decades.
